A Spanish public research entity has developed a method for the identification and tracking of marine eddies. The technique exploits publicly available maps of sea surface height that are obtained from altimeters carried aboard satellites. Partners interested in a patent license are being sought.
Type of partner:
– Marine environment software products provider
Tasks to be performed:
– License agreement
– End user software adaptation
– Commercialization
Advantages & innovations:
– Results can be available near-real time.
– The probability of identifying a large irregularly-shaped feature as an eddy is lower than current approaches.
– Fishermen can benefit from prior knowledge of the locations of eddies.
– The eddy tracker can be a valuable addition to existing optimal-routing applications for shipping and navigation. Routes can be optimized hence saving time and fuel.
